For decades the City of Chicago has been taking away public mental health resources from neighborhoods. In 2009, Chicago mayor Richard Daley closed 4 mental health clinics on the west side. In 2013, then mayor Rahm Emanuel closed six.
Chicago’s disinvestment and closure of the public mental health clinics has left communities without reliable care and left many people on long wait lists.
We believes that everyone should have access to quality public mental healthcare. We want the city to respond to the growing mental health crisis with community investment in public resources not armed police. In order to find a solution to Chicago’s public safety crisis we need to create a system of care that is public, open to all, and accessible (in terms of price, location, and language).
Join us at one of our teach-in healing village events or fill out the form below to learn more about our campaign and ways you can support yourself, loved ones, and your community to win the mental health care we deserve.
We are all we have. Healing Villages bring our communities the opportunity to receive a mental health screening by a licensed clinical social worker, learn about the public mental health clinics, and connect with resources in the neighborhood.
